Science and Engineering Challenge

Location: Trade Training Centre or Barrett Building

Year Levels: Year 9, Year 10

Description:

Science and Engineering Challenge Training Sessions are designed for enthusiastic students in Years 9 and 10 who wish to compete in the prestigious Science and Engineering Challenge, organised annually by the University of Newcastle. Held in Term 2, these training sessions aim to prepare students for the multi-level competition that includes regional heats, state finals, and, if successful, the national final.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is a dynamic, hands-on event that immerses students in the principles of science, engineering, mathematics, and technology. Participants will collaborate in teams of four to tackle a variety of engaging projects, such as constructing model hovercrafts, catapults, and bridges, as well as designing power networks and eco-friendly homes. Each challenge presents numerous correct solutions, requiring students to strategically navigate trade-offs between cost, aesthetics, and maintainability. Through these training sessions, students will enhance their problem-solving skills, foster creativity, and build teamwork capabilities.

Please note that this activity is only offered in Term 3.
